Sphinxes was approved as a PI adoptable in February of 2007. Since then, it has grown into one of the best loved adoptables on PI. The Sphinxes is well known for it's friendly community, full of generous, helpful, (and slightly obsessive) stalkers. We are a group who loves to play games and have fun, to encourage and allow people to enjoy their time in the Sphinx world, and to spread the love of these wonderful creatures and the amazing civilization that inspired them.

~ If you are active on the thread and don't own a sphinx but want one, we'll make sure to get you one ASAP!

About the Colorists:

There are currently seven different possible colorists for the Sphinxes, between those who color regularly, and those who color less regularly. You may tell who colored your sphinx by looking for the artist's mark. Six of the colorists have their own symbol attached to the cert, while the lack of any artist mark will indicate that the colorist was PookaWitch.

Certificate Stamps:

There are special circumstances which may earn your sphinx a unique stamp on their cert. You can collect these stamps in a variety of ways, and we plan to add more stamps over time. Currently, the stamps you can see are here:
The Crook and the Flail
This stamp was awarded to sphinxes who made it to the end of the 2011 Heb Bastet official RP. Sphinxes who wear this stamp are considered a 'Hero of Ahket'. These sphinxes are considered so famous for stopping a civil war and finding a new Pharoah, that they can never be lowered in rank (unless they choose to).

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I get one?
We have frequent giveaways, occational auctions and very rarely (when Pooka has the time) USD customs.

Can I roleplay my sphinx?
Please do! We've also set up a forum just for RPing and making character profiles. While your there check out some of the awsome character sheets made by AriyaEretsee and toramonger!

Can I be a colourist?
Sorry no. We're not looking for colourists at the moment. If we're interested usually we'll approach you with an offer to guest colour.

Who are Pooka and Mr. Pooka?
We're a married couple. Pooka is "PookaWitch" and Mr. Pooka is, well, Mr. Pooka. The Sphinxes account is the manager account for the adoptable, but is used 99% of the time by Mr. Pooka for forum posting. (If Pooka is posting from the shared Sphinxes account she'll make sure to put a note that it's Pooka typing, erm, when she remembers.)

Are all sphinxes based out of an Egyptian setting?
Our main setting is a fantasy Egypt, but travelers from more and more places have been turning up recently!

Where to the sphinxes live?
Khem (or Khemet), which is the Ancient Egyptian term for, well Egypt. They have a capital city called Ahket where 90% of the population are sphinxes. (There are other, fantasy setting, creatures there, but mostly those who would be living in Egypt. Humans and dwarves (usually obsidian skinned) are the most common non-sphinxes, but occationally other, different creatures come from foreign lands. (ie. elves from the Celtic lands)

Can I have a Pharaoh or Queen sphinx?
Sorry, those are severely restricted due to how unbalancing it would be to own one. There are 'royal wives' though, who are lvl 3 females (usually courtiers) who are married to the Pharaoh and given the respect and courtesy that a Pharaoh's wife deserves.

Why are 4th lvl sphinxes so rare?
4th lvl sphinxes tend to have a special ability that can create more work for Pooka, such as being able to create items every month, or change sphinx names, ownership and such (with the owner's permission of course). So to keep a close tab on who has them, and what they are doing it would have to be a very, very special situation to get one. (Think of them much like the very rare specials for other adoptables.)

Will there be more classes?
We're always adding more to every part of Sphinxes!

How do I raise my sphinx's level or change class?
Often raising levels or changing classes are done through giveaways or roleplays and job fair events. Lvl 3 classes have a required prerequisite to gain, such as being a scribe to become a magician.

Can Sphinxes be traded?
Yes, but Sphinxes are natural guardians and tend not to appreciate being shifted from household to household like a commodity.

Sphinxes can be traded for a flat fee of 100,000 pg (sent to the sphinxes account). However the two trading wish to figure out who pays, or how the cost is split is up to them.

After some discussion, it has been decided that; at the moment, sphinxes can be traded for adoptables, adoptable items, pg, bp, USD, and even items. BUT we are in no way responsible if one side of the trade does not go through. This is the typical situation of 'Buyer Beware'. All the Sphinxes staff does is recert, we have nothing to do with the trades themselves, sorry. If we find that opening up Sphinx trades for pg, bp, USD and items is trouble, or too much of a pain, we will close off trading.

Can Sphinxes be renamed?
Yes, but it takes the high ren hekau (name magic) of a High Mage to do so (at the moment, that is TaRepy EF09 ). TaRepy doesn't like having to work though, and can be stubborn about changing a name, and at times may flat out refuse to do so. If you catch her in a good mood she may change it, but bribes usually help. ;)

Roleplaying wise, there is a slight effect with changing a name. In khemetic belief a person's true name makes up who they are, and to change even their known name it means a tweaking of their true name. This could have huge changes, or something very minor. It's only a roleplaying note, and doesn't not need to be used at all. The change could be something as serious as complete personality rehauls, to as minor as suddenly not liking a food that you never even tried, so there is no way to know that something is different. So simply put, it's an option to put in some roleplaying changes, but just an option. (Handy if the name is being changed because the sphinx was traded. ;) )

How do I use an item I've won (job upgrade, henna etc.).
Simply send a PM to Sphinxes any time and your request will be added into Pooka's or Mr. Pookas 'to do' lists.

What does the ID# stand for?
The letters EM and EF stand for Egyptian Male, Egyptian Female. With the Grecian sphinxes the G in the cert stands for Greek. The number usually represents the order that the sphinxes were made in, but due to numerous artists this is not always the case. Unless there was an error, every sphinx of a certain gender/species should have it's own number. (ie. There is only one EM25 and one EF25.) This number has been reset to 00 for the Grecian sphinxes since they have new ID# compared to the Egyptians. The Netjer are also here now and follow the same # rules as the Greeks above, using the NF and NM code. The purpose of this is to make any name changes simpler, since we organize/cert the sphinxes by their ID instead of their names.
