Breeding seasons are an exciting time for all sphinxes. Couples of all kinds have the opportunity to bring new life into the world. With the blessings of the gods, any sphinx pairing has the opportinity to have children, though some pairings will require special items to help secure the gods' blessings. For normal couples, no breeding items are required to produce a cub.
The Breeding Season:
Breeding season in the Sphinxes adoptable uses a slot system. Every month, a limited number of slots become available. Hopeful couples will be entered into a breeding raffle run by Random.org to determine who wins the slots.
Once a slot is secured, a die roll is performed to see if the breeding was a success. Successful rolls will mean the couple will have a baby that season. Unsuccessful couples will receive no children that season. Married sphinxes have a greater chance of a successful pregnancy roll, as the gods looked more favorably on children being raised in homes with more than one parent. Married sphinxes have a total of a 65% chance of a successful breeding (%50 of a singleton, 10% chance of twins, 4% chance of triplets, and 1% chance of quadruplets) and a 35% chance of an unsuccessful pregnancy. Unmarried sphinxes have only a total of 25% chance of a successful pregnancy (24% chance of a single cub, a 1% chance for twins) and a 75% chance for no pregnancy. Items are only used up if a breeding was successful.
Once a female (or a male carrying a cub) successfully breeds, she cannot carry another cub for three more months. Males (or females) siring a cub have no restrictions. Once a player successfully claims a slot, they must sit out the next month's breeding season, whether their breeding was successful or not.
There are special breeding enhancement items that can alter your chances for a cub. These are listed below.
Greek and Netjer Breeding:
There is currently no way to breed Greek and Netjer babies. Greek and Netjer sphinxes may breed with Egyptian sphinxes, but the reulting babies will always be of the Egyptian body type.
The Genetics of Sphinxes:
For all breedings where no extra items are involved, all cubs are generated by the roll of the dice. Everything from mutations to coloration is decided randomly. For most mutations, they will pass on at a rate of 50% if one parent has the trait, or 100% if both parents have the traits. For Wings and Manes, because they are meant to be rarer, they will pass at 20% chance if one parent has the trait, and 40% chance if both parents have it.
There are special breeding enhancement items that can alter the appearance of your cub. These are listed below.
Growing Cubs:
Sphinxes have four life stages: Cub, Child, Teen, and Adult.
The cub is the first stage of a Sphinx's life. All cubs are born with their eyes closed, but most of the inherited traits will be visible.
There is no requirement to grow a cub to a child. You just submit the request to the artist who colored your cub, and it will be done in time.
Information about growing your child stage sphinxes to teens will be released when the teen templates are finished. There will likely be some requirement for growing your teen to an adult. The class that your sphinx becomes depends mostly on the classes of the parents. There is a there is a large chance that the cub will fall into the same class as the parent of the same gender they are. There is also 30% chance of taking on class of the parent of the opposite gender, a 15% chance that they will gain a different class of the same level, a 3% chance that they will have a class of a lower level and a 2% chance that they will gain a class of a higher level. If they do gain a different class then their parents, it is randomly rolled... such is fate.
